Race Day Event Map Detailing Parking, Activities and Key Locations (PDF)
On Sunday, October 2, 2011, we completed the fourth annual running of the Brooksie Way Half-Marathon and 5K event. We were very excited to once again bring this event to the area and to showcase all that the Rochester and Rochester Hills area has to offer.
RACE MORNING BROOKSIE WAY PARKING
There are two convenient, designated parking locations, along with many other nearby neighborhood parking areas. Designated areas will be clearly marked with signage.
If you are traveling from the east, north or south, you can park in the large grassy lot at the corner of Walton and Adams, near the electronic Meadow Brook sign. For this lot, it is recommended that you enter through the Adams Blvd entrance. From this lot you can walk the short distance to the new Brooksie Way start line, located on the Oakland University campus within the Meadow Brook Music Festival grounds.
If you are coming from the west you will find a designated parking area on the Oakland University Campus, at the corner of Squirrel and University. This is Lot 1 and will be the pick-up and drop-off point for regular shuttle service to the start/finish lines before and after the race.
TRAFFIC FLOW
While we know there are certainly some challenges with regards to traffic flow on race morning, we ask for your patience as you traverse the area. We have worked hard to minimize the inconvenience as much as possible and will do our best to get you to your destination by providing detour information at the traffic points on the course. Also, this year we have implemented a “rolling closure” plan that will allow the roads on the course to remain open longer rather than closing the entire course at the same time.
All roads used for the actual race course will be closed to traffic at various times.
This will allow the traffic control officers to make sure all motorists have cleared before the race begins. As the last runners/walkers pass a traffic control point, and when it is safe to do so, the road will be opened for traffic.
We would estimate the Walton/Old Perch/Avon area to be completely opened by 9:00 a.m. Traffic control officers will allow motorists to cross the race course at any time providing it is safe to do so. NO traffic will be allowed to drive on the course while the race is in progress. Our goal is to make this event as safe as possible for participants and also for motorists.
The intersection of Walton Blvd. and Adams Rd. will be completely closed at 7:30 am. Once the runners/walkers have cleared Walton Blvd., turning on Old Perch, by approximately 8:45 am.. the intersection will partially re-open. Westbound Walton Blvd. traffic will be detoured to southbound on Adams Rd. Also, northbound Adams Rd. traffic will be detoured eastbound on Walton Blvd.
No traffic will be allowed north or south on Adams Rd, north of Walton Blvd. until 12:00 pm.
Downtown Rochester will likely be very congested. North/South traffic will likely be backed up significantly at University and Main. The runners will be running westbound on University crossing Main and proceeding to Pine St. The intersection will likely be shut down at approximately 8:30 as the runners approach downtown from the Clinton River Trail.
Due to construction on Raintree, there will be no access to Adams Road from Raintree. If you are trying to exit any of the subs in that area, all traffic north of Raintree can exit north to Dutton and south of Raintree can exit south to Walton.
Suggested alternate routes:
From the South: East on Avon to Dequindre. North on Dequindre to Runyon. West on Runyon to Washington. North on Washington to Winkler Mill. West on Winkler Mill to Mead. West on Mead to Rochester.
From the North: East on Mead to Winkler Mill. South on Winkler Mill to Washington. West on Washington to Runyon. East on Runyon to Dequindre. South on Dequindre to Avon. West on Avon to Rochester.
Also runners Second St. between Main and Elizabeth, and Letica between Elizabeth and Parkdale will be temporarily blocked while the runners clear the downtown area. In addition several intersections will be temporarily blocked as the runners cross, they are: Woodward & Main; Ludlow & University; Second & Main; and Letica & Parkdale.
Tienken Rd. from Paint Creek Trail intersection to Brewster Rd. will close to traffic at approximately 8:30 am and will remain close until approximately 12:00 pm. Vehicles will be able to cross Tienken Rd. at Livernois when it is safe to do so and allowed by the traffic control officer.
Brewster Rd. between Tienken and Dutton Rds. will be closed to traffic at approximately 8:30 am and re-opened at approximately 12:00 pm. Traffic from the Hawthorne Hills subdivision will be allowed to access southbound Brewster from Lambeth Park St. ONLY.
Dutton Rd. between Brewster and Adams Rds. will close to traffic at approximately 8:30 am and re-open at approximately 12:00 pm. Vehicles traveling westbound on Dutton will be detoured to northbound Brewster at the intersection.
Access to the Village of Rochester Hills shopping plaza will be by westbound Walton Blvd. or northbound Adams to eastbound Walton, then using the median turnaround to access the plaza. There will be no access in or out from Adams Rd. between 7:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
Access to the University Square shopping plaza will be by Walton Blvd. from WEST of Adams Rd.. Motorists leaving the plaza will be directed westbound on Walton toward Squirrel. There will be no access in or out from Adams Rd. between 7:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
Main North/South route will be Livernois Rd. Motorists will be able to cross the race course on Livernois when safe to do so.
Access to Adams & Dutton intersection will be from the west of Adams, or from north of Dutton.
For the residents of Brookwood Subdivision
Tienken Road will be closed at 8:30 a.m. and will remain closed until 12:00 noon or until the last Brooksie Way participant turns on Brewster, whichever comes first. There will be a ONE-WAY traffic lane at the entrance to the sub. The eastbound lane of Tienken between Brewster and Brookwood will be separated by construction barrels. There will be a police officer stationed at Brewster and at Brookwood acting as flaggers such as in a construction zone. When a vehicle appears at the subdivision entrance, the officer will direct the vehicle westbound to Brewster, then southbound. Conversely, when a vehicle wants to get to the subdivision, they must get to Brewster and Tienken from the south and they will be then directed eastbound by the officer.
For residents of Hawthorne Subdivision
From 8:30 a.m. until approximately 12:00 noon, residents of the sub will be able to exit to Brewster from Lambeth Park. Traffic will be allowed southbound only and directed south on Brewster to Walton. If during that time you wish to re-enter the subdivision, you must do it by approaching the intersection of Adams and Dutton from the west. When it is safe to do so, the traffic officer at the corner will direct you to enter at Kilburn.
Again, we would like to thank you for your patience during the event. We hope this will be an event the entire community can be proud of.
